The Weight of the World: Introducing Pierre Bourdieu

How are the privileges and injustices of our world perpetuated so easily? How and why are the most intolerable conditions of existence so often be perceived as acceptable and even natural? This course proposes a new understanding of domination in our societies. Drawing on the pathbreaking work of one of the most influential intellectuals, Pierre Bourdieu, the course aims to re-think matters of inequality, education, culture, race, gender, colonialism, migration, marginality, the penal state, intimate violence, management of poverty, media, and politics. By revisiting the grounds of a subversive knowledge which revolutionized how we frame the world, and by applying it to different realities in which we live, the goal is to sharpen our understating of the social dynamics governing the injustices of today’s world. It is also to enlighten how social and human sciences could account for and bring about social change.
